A vintage studio pottery art vase, by Carn Pottery, Penzance, Cornwall from the 1970s or so…

Carn Pottery was John Beusmans; he used muted matt blue, brown and green washes over a pale neutral-toned clays and is best known for his geometric Cubist or angular pieces.

John was inspired by the Cornish sea and landscapes with primitive Celtic/Runic Studio Pottery designs.

This vase is a large straight-sided rectangular shaped block vase.

The outers of this vase were probably moulded, then different contrasting decors were hand applied.

One side has a looping/scribble design with a blue circle containing abstract patterns.

The other side has a lovely concentric rectangle shape. Scribbles to both sides.

It has muted pale beige brown earthy tones, with the blue circle.

A pale fine cream clay sculpture with a glossy glazed inner.

It has a Carn Pottery stamp to the base (feint) and a hand scribed model number ’37’… the stamps wore off over time and with use.

A large statement 23.5cm tall x 9.3cm wide x 7cm deep.

Good condition with a few small signs of its age – but displays very well.

One fine hairline inside and a historic baseline chip out of sight.

Holds water, functional.

Poole Pottery vintage ceramic, dusky teal blue glaze seated cat figure ornament

A sitting proud 1970s-1980s studio pottery cat figurine, by Poole Pottery…

These Siamese-style cat figurines are beautiful and vary with glaze, size and left or right facing (like book ends). This fellow is the left hand one and is in the classic dusky teal blue/grey glaze. It’s like a dusky petrol blue colour. The glaze is smooth and glossy and fluid with blended brush strokes. He has blacker features/details and is stamped to the base with the Poole logo. The clay is a white fine clay like a porcelain. He would have been hand moulded then hand decorated – the maker’s marks are to the base (a painted L). I believe the range was designed by Barbara Linley-Adams and dates from 1970-1983 (ish).

16.3cm tall x 9cm x 5.5cm.

Very good condition with no chips to the ears or uppers. No crazing.

A small slither chip to the baseline underneath out of sight.

Colin Melbourne Petra 1950s mid century vase Royal Norfolk Staffordshire vintage

A super Colin Melbourne ‘Petra’ design vase.

Model no 101 by Royal Norfolk, England.

The design originated in 1958 and ran into the 1960s.

Colin worked for many of the Staffordshire potteries and worked with Beswick, Trentham, Midwinter etc.

22.5cm tall. 7.5cm rim.

Uppers are smooth with beige and black abstract grass print.

Lower third is contrasting bark textured and solid matt brown.

Quite striking – and great mid century design!

Very good for age with just fine crazing.

No chips or cracks.

1966 vintage hand-painted Italian Majolica ceramic wall plate from Deruta, Italy

A mid century ornamental wall plate from Deruta, Italy.

It was bought as a souvenir and has the writing ‘Pietra Ligure 1966’ on the back – suggesting a holiday.

I think we can date this to a 1966 holiday.

The plate is 15.5cm or 6″ wide.

It has hanging string to the back.

Hand painted – depicting a folk dancer or traditional character in black white and deep burgundy red.

Very good.

Vintage Radford small hand painted flower vase and milk jug, HJ Wood. 1940s, 50s

A pair of Radford (or HJ Wood produced Radford post 1948) items.

A small vase and a milk/cream jug.

Both feature hand painted flowers, different to each side.

Over a pale mottled blue base with pink mottled inners.

A pale ceramic.

Vase is 9.5cm. Impressed with model number 668, Made in England and the decorator’s marks.

Jug is 8cm wide x 6.5cm tallest at lip, stamped with model number 10, and Radford England Handpainted.

Both very good for age with no chips. Jug has fine crazing on close inspection.

A super little Italian pin dish, leather backed.

It’s mid century – circa 1960s-1970s retro.

Handpainted, San Marino style, with sgraffito incised white outlines.

Ceramic, with red and black flower and yellow decor and purple leather back.

Underneath has three little feet – tripod.

9 x 6.5 x 2cm

Very good.

Scheurich West German pottery floor vase 291-38 1980s retro kitsch pink. Vintage

A Scheurich West German floor vase from the 1980s.

It’s an off-white glaze with brown random speckles, brown inner and a transfer print to one side.

The print is a pink flower branch – so 1980s!

It’s a large statement size and ideal as an 80s prop.

Model number 291-38.

Very good with no chips or crazing.

Big and heavy – 38cm tall x 13cm outer rim, 9cm inner rim, 17cm widest.

Can be displayed any way round – so can be plain speckles if needed.

Royal Dux large stretching black cat 24501 mid century modernist Bohemian Koruka

A gorgeous vintage Royal Dux (Bohemia, Czech Republic) large cat figure.

She’s a minimalist/modernist and stylised porcelain cat in glossy white with matt black, designed by Koruka.

The design dates from around the 1950s mid century and this version is circa mid 1990s.

The cat is stretching and is hand painted.

She’s a stunning vintage ornamental display item, perfect for a mid century, retro or modern home.

The sculpture has its pink triangular Bohemia base stamp, a round green base stamp saying ‘Made in Czech Republic’, and has model number 24501 embossed, along with an ‘R’ and ’45’ and ‘4’.

Very good condition with no chips or scuffs.

A very feint triangular mark where the original sticker has come off.

About 31cm long x 13cm tall x 7.5cm deep.

Rye Pottery vintage ceramic pin dish, ornamental plate. 1950s 1960s blue flower

A vintage studio pottery pin dish by Rye Pottery, Sussex.

The base stamp and white clay dates it to 1957 to 1969, mid century era.

Rye Pottery was John Cole and Walter Cole. Walter (Wally) was responsible for creating the ceramics and running the pottery while John made the designs and created the patterns and decorations. As their work became increasingly popular, the Coles began to employ and train other staff – throwers David Sharp, Dennis Townsend, Raymond Everett, David Smeed and Jim Elliott who were later joined by Pam Goddard and June Woolley. No exact maker’s marks so it’s hard to know who this was by, likely Walter Cole.

Wheel thrown and glazed off-white, the dish has black outer ring, then yellow and a deep red band – all with sgraffito lines. Internally it has a fine blue atomic star with blue spiral and black dots.

All quite typical of the 1950s and their decors.

12cm wide – best for display and for a collector rather than use.

In very good condition with no real signs of age.

No chips or crazing.

Jenny Haigh Poole A22 egg-shaped pottery bud vase + 2 holes, sculpture. Vintage

A super vintage art pottery egg-shaped piece by Jennie Haigh for Poole Pottery, circa 1973-1976.

The egg sculpture is a stoneware ceramic, glazed in a pale beige speckled glaze, with brown dashes.

It features two holes for single stem flowers, if used.

It looks to be part of the Atlantis range – model number A22.

10cm tall x 8.5cm wide.

Very good with no flaws.

Looks new really.

Stamps to the base.
