Description

A vintage studio pottery jug by Cinque Port Pottery, Rye, Sussex. The base stamp dates this to a 1950s-1960s mid century example…

Rye Art Pottery was founded in 1956 by potter David Sharp and his friend George Gray. David had previously worked at the similarly-named Rye Pottery, so Rye Art Pottery was renamed Cinque Port Pottery instead. Cinque Port Pottery was a successful venture, with David Sharp as the artist. By the early 60s the partnership became a limited company – Cinque Ports Pottery Ltd (note, the new use of the plural ‘Ports’ and the addition of Ltd). Sharp worked there until 1964. So I think we can probably date this early piece to 1956-1962 or so, and by David Sharp.

Wheel thrown and glazed white, the small piece has dusky yellow stripes with fine black stripes and wiggly lines – the Cottage Stripe decor that Rye Pottery did so well too. White Clay base with illegible base stamp.

9.5 x 7cm around the belly.

In vintage condition with some fine crazing lines if you look closely, all out of sight.
Good for a shelf display.
