Description
A vintage studio pottery narrow bud vase, by Carn Pottery, Penzance, Cornwall from the 1970s or so…
Carn Pottery was John Beusmans; he used muted blue, brown and green glazes over a pale neutral-toned clays and is best known for his geometric Cubist or angular pieces. This is tapering narrow vase with holes to the top part for additional stems or decoration, coloured with blue, then rubbed back to reveal highlights and lowlights. A pale stoneware/clay sculpture with a glossy glazed inner. John was inspired by the Cornish sea and landscapes and primitive Celtic/Runic Studio Pottery designs.
This example has one side with a geometric linear design, the other with a flower with leaves. One side has a spiral and a cross. The blue is a washed-out and muted barely-there denim blue with neutral ivory tones. Hand signed to the base with model number ‘4’ along with his (very feint) stamp.
11cm tall x 7.5cm wide at the wide belly.
Very good condition.
Only suited to one stem.
There’s lots of shapes and colour tones to collect!
