Description
A lovely art pottery vase… It’s a Bitossi lookalike by Bitossi ex-employees at Studio 4.
Italian and mid century 1970s.
It’s bears a striking resemblance in feel, clay, colour and embossed stamps and patterns to Bitossi’s Spagnolo and Arabesque decors, copying Aldo Londi’s designs by his ex co-workers.
It’s by Studio 4: “Some of the items are almost identical to Bitossi in form and execution… Studio 4, a company founded in 1972 by Lelio Rossi and four other former Bitossi employees. They were known to copy Bitossi decors. The factory was situated in Capraia, just outside Montelupo.“
16cm tall x 16cm wide globe or ball shape with flared rim.
Mustard yellow and brown with forest/khaki green trims.
The same rough clay as Bitossi and the same working methods.
Handmade in Italy, thrown on a wheel and hand decorated and hand painted.
Unsigned.
Many of these are sold as Bitossi, and they certainly fit in with Bitossi displays.
Good used condition.
Being a rough clay there are a number of flakes around the edges of the middle patterns. These could be disguised if wanted, but are quite normal for vintage ‘bitossi’. See pics for examples, and see how well it displays.
No rim chips or cracks.
