A pair of top hat and white gloves egg cups by Leo Bonassera, Rye, Sussex.
Hand painted moulded ceramic, and typically 1980s.
Leo made these in about the 1980s from his own studio pottery in Rye, down near the river. They were moulded, then the gloves were painted in latex, then it was sprayed in black glaze, latex removed, dipped with clear glaze, then fired… so I’m lead to believe. They came from a series of quirky items such as the larger top hats and gloves – some of which were made at Iden pottery due to the larger size of them.
Hard to find and good for a collector.
5.5cm x 7.5 x 6cm ish.
Some natural flaws from at the time – one has a thinner black glaze to the sides with a dot of black missing from the hat rim – all from production. And the other has a dot of black to the white.
They were probably too fiddly to make versus the price, so hard to find.
No chips. No maker’s marks.
