Description
A vintage handmade vase, by Rye Pottery, Sussex.
This is a lovely sgraffito (scratched) Astrakhan pattern and is a mid century late 1950s original.
Maker’s stamp dates it to 1957-1969.
Rye Pottery was John Cole and Walter Cole. Walter (Wally) was responsible for creating the ceramics and running the pottery while John made the designs and created the patterns and decorations. As their work became increasingly popular, the Coles began to employ and train other staff – throwers David Sharp, Dennis Townsend, Raymond Everett, David Smeed and Jim Elliott, who were later joined by Pam Goddard and June Woolley.
This looks to be made by John Cole and decorated by Wally.

Wheel thrown and glazed off-white, the slightly flared simple vase has dusky blacks, with very fine vertical sgraffito lines with shorter horizontal dashes – atomic style. Like a starry night sky.
Very good condition, as manufactured/hand made.
