A vintage studio pottery handmade tall mug, by Celtic Pottery, Newlyn, Cornwall from the late 1960s or early 1970s.
Celtic Pottery was Bill and Maggie Fisher. Bill specialised in these paintings of stylised mythical grotesque phoenixes, fish, birds, griffins, patterns etc. Maggie later took on theses ‘Folk’ designs. I believe these character pieces are late 1960s.
It’s beautifully hand painted with a stylised phoenix character, in black, over an ochre and blue speckled background glaze. The eye has been defined sgraffito style, see pics. The rim has black spots, and the clay below is a pale off-white colour. It’s unsigned (like most). Simple cylinder design, probably more suited as an ornamental piece, but could be used.
13cm tall x 6.8cm wide.
Very good condition with a few teeny spots of missing glaze from the black handle.
No crazing.
Handmade, so all glazing and painting is deliberate and from at the time.
