Description
A Savoy vase, designed in 1936 by Alvar Aalto…
The biomorphic form with free-flowing and undulating walls started life as a sketch entitled “Eskimo Woman’s Leather Breeches” which won a competition in 1936. The design was exhibited at the Paris World Fair in 1937 and production of the pieces started in 1937 by Karhula. One of the first purchases was by the Savoy restaurant, Helskinki (of which Aalto was the architect) – hence the ‘Savoy’ name. Production moved to iittala in 1949, and in 1970s the name of the design was changed to ‘Aalto’ to commemorate the designer.
This version of the design is most likely 1970s to 1990s vintage. It is etch signed to the base with ‘Alvar Aalto’. It’s clear with a crystal content. It’s mould blown glass, with a cut and polished flat rim, hand made in Finland.
Good with one side chip to the top of a vertical face – not showing on the rim.
9.5cm high x 11.5cm wide x 9cm deep.
