Description

A vintage studio pottery bowl by Cinque Port Pottery, Rye, Sussex. The early base stamp dates this to a 1950s mid century example…

Rye Art Pottery was founded in 1956 by potter David Sharp and his friend George Gray. David had previously worked at the similarly-named Rye Pottery, so Rye Art Pottery was renamed Cinque Port Pottery instead. Cinque Port Pottery was a successful venture, with David Sharp as the artist. By the early 60s the partnership became a limited company – Cinque Ports Pottery Ltd (note, the new use of the plural ‘Ports’ and the addition of Ltd). Sharp worked there until 1964. So I think we can probably date this early piece to 1956-1962 or so, and very likely by David Sharp.

Wheel thrown and glazed white, the small footed oval bowl has dusky pink vertical stripes with black grey – all scribbled sketch style. And a black base. The red clay was excavated locally to Rye in the early days I believe.

11.5 x 8.5cm wide x 7cm tall.

In very good condition. It has its handmade glazing quirks and bubbles etc – see photos, mostly to the black. No visible chips or crazing. Tiny rim imperfection. Early stamp to the base.
