Description
A vintage ornamental plant pot holder or indoor planter, by Rye Pottery, England.
The stamp dates it to mid 1950s to mid 1960s and by Jim Elliott.
Rye Pottery was John Cole and Walter Cole. Walter (Wally) was responsible for creating the ceramics and running the pottery while John made the designs and created the patterns and decorations. As their work became increasingly popular, the Coles began to employ and train other staff – throwers David Sharp, Dennis Townsend, Raymond Everett, David Smeed and Jim Elliott, who were later joined by Pam Goddard and June Woolley.
Wheel thrown and glazed white, the bowl or vase or planter, has been painted with a dusky grey blue with vertical sgraffito lines scratched through to the white.
The red clay was hand dug locally by the Coles for their pottery (later items are white clay), dating it to an earlier piece.
Best for display and for a collector rather than use.
In very good condition with no chips or crazing.
May have handmade glazing quirks like bubbles – see photos.
Being wheel thrown the pot is wonky – more oval in shape.
Some internal old rust spots.
12.5cm tall x 15x13cm oval rim.
Would hold a pot of 12 x 12cm max, inner bowl is not flat.
