Description
A vintage 1974 handmade pottery mug or coffee cup, and saucer, by Rye Pottery, Sussex.
This is in a Blue Stripe pattern and is a mid century 1970s original.
Rye Pottery was John Cole and Walter Cole from 1947. Walter (Wally) was responsible for creating the ceramics and running the pottery while John made the designs and created the patterns and decorations. As their work became increasingly popular, the Coles began to employ and train other staff – throwers David Sharp, Dennis Townsend, Raymond Everett, David Smeed and Jim Elliott, who were joined by Pam Goddard and June Woolley.

This is signed ‘P’ for Pam Goddard. Pam was active at Rye Pottery from 1948 until 1984. She mostly worked on their Cottage Stripes designs. The back stamp is 1969-1978. The piece was personalised ‘R&L 1974’, probably for a wedding. Dating the mug from exactly 1974.
The (harder to find) saucer has a stamp dating from 1957-1969. So was made earlier, then later paired.
Wheel thrown and glazed off-white, the simple mug has dark blue wide hand-painted vertical stripes. It’s a whiter clay/stoneware.
Excellent condition, as manufactured/hand made.
