Description
A vintage studio pottery small shallow dish, by Celtic Pottery, Newlyn, Cornwall from the late 1960s or early 1970s.
Celtic Pottery was Bill and Maggie Fisher.
Bill specialised in these paintings of stylised grotesque/aggressive phoenixes, fish, birds, patterns etc.
Maggie later took on theses ‘Folk’ designs.
I believe these character pieces are late 1960s.
It’s hand painted with a stylised angry fish with thick black outlines and a green halo, over a white background glaze.
The edges are spotted black and the clay below is pale.
It’s unsigned (like many) but typical of their distinctive characters.
Simple rounded square design, probably more suited as an ornamental pin or coin dish – perfect for display and for a collector.
10.5 x 10cm wide x 1.5cm tall.
Good condition.
No noticeable flaws, some glazing and pottery imperfections from at the time.
